Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery (LiFePO4, LFP) is a type of electric battery, which is a type of lithium ion battery that uses LiFePO4 as the cathode.
This type of battery is actively used as a buffer energy storage in autonomous power supply systems using wind generators and solar panels, as well as in electric bicycles, electric scooters and electric vehicles.

Features of lithium iron phosphate batteries:

  • LiFePO4 provides longer life than other lithium ion approaches;
  • Unlike other lithium ionic, LiFePO4 batteries, like nickel They have a very stable discharge voltage. The output voltage remains close to 3.2 V during discharge until the battery is completely depleted. And this can greatly simplify or even eliminate the need for voltage regulation in circuits.
  • Due to the constant output voltage of 3.2V, four batteries can be connected in series to obtain a nominal output voltage of 12.8V, which is close to the rated voltage of the six-cell lead acid battery. This, along with the good safety characteristics of LFP batteries, makes them a good potential replacement for lead acid batteries in many industries such as automotive and solar energy.
  • Phosphates avoid cobalt costs and environmental concerns. in particular, if cobalt is released into the environment due to improper disposal.
  • LiFePO4 has a higher peak current (and, given voltage stability, peak power) than LiCoO2.
  • Specific gravity The energy (energy/volume) of the new LFP battery is about 14% lower than that of the new lithium-ion batteries.
  • LiFePO4 batteries have a lower discharge rate than lead acid or lithium ion batteries. Since the discharge rate is defined as a percentage of the battery capacity, a higher discharge rate can be achieved with larger batteries (more ampere-hours). However, LiFePO4 cells with a high discharge current (which have a higher discharge rate than lead-acid batteries or LiCoO2 of the same capacity) can be used.
  • Due to the slower decrease in energy density, after some operating time LiFePO4 cells already have a higher energy density than LiCoO2 and lithium-ion cells.
  • LiFePO4 cells lose capacity more slowly than lithium-ion cells (LiCoO2 [lithium cobalt oxide], LiMn2O4 [lithium manganese spinel])
  • One of the important advantages over other types of lithium-ion batteries is thermal and chemical stability, which significantly increases the safety of the battery.
  • Frost resistance. For example, for the battery ANR26650M1-B [2] manufactured by A123 Systems, the temperature range is -30°C ... 55°C for operation and -40°C ... 60°C for storage.
