Thomas Burns Going Nowhere Without Tracing: Practical Tips for Implementing Traceability
Very often, during the implementation of a software development project, the requirement cannot be linked to the stakeholder, because important functionality is missing, or unnecessary functions appear in the final product - and all this "without tracing." That is, there is no discoverable relationship between the work relevant to that particular function and the actual need for that function. However, the concept of "traceability" is directly related to the quality of the manufactured product. Unfortunately, traceability is often overlooked.
In fact, my experience in providing consulting services shows that not a single aspect of technical requirements development is 1) so often mentioned as the most important part of the developer's activity and 2) so often ignored in practice1. I will give my guesses as to why this is happening. Then I will suggest some best practices for dealing with these causes. While traceability applies to other disciplines of the Rational Universal Process (RUP) and there are many other parameters to track, such as discrepancies, assumptions, and risks, this article focuses primarily on technical requirements.
